TOOTH PAIN WHILE EATING SWEETS? DOCTOR! MY TOOTH HURTS WHEN EATING SWEETS. BUT I HAVE NO CAVITIES.

It is an interesting question. Sometimes people do not have any cavities but interestingly suffer a lot from eating sweets. There are numerous conditions that result in tooth pain while eating sweets.

Tooth pain while eating sweets? What are the treatment options for it?

Let us answer these questions. But before that, there are a few things that you should know.

Every tooth contains three layers in them. The central portion is called the Pulp chamber which contains blood vessels and nerves.

The second layer is the Dentin. It contains numerous tubules within it called dentinal tubules.

These tubules contain nerve endings that open directly into the pulp chamber. Obviously, they play a pivotal role in causing pain or sensitivity.

The outermost layer is called Enamel. It is the most substantial part of the tooth.

Cervical abrasion- parts of teeth

If a tooth doesn’t have any caries, but still pains a lot while eating sweets. Such conditions do arise when the teeth are not caries affected. Instead, there may be a second primary reason called “THE CERVICAL ABRASION”.

What are cervical abrasions?

Cervical abrasions are local enamel losses. They occur between gum margins and tooth, where the enamel gets chipped off, leaving a piece of dentin exposed.

What causes cervical abrasion?

It is due to improper brushing.
Excess horizontal brushing can cause abrasions on the tooth.

Brushing causes cervical abrasion

What happens in cervical abrasion?

When any concentrated solution (let it be sweet, salt, sour or any other taste), comes in contact with the cervical abrasion, then the nerve endings in the dentinal portion of the tooth gets activated.

This activation results in pain sensation for the patient. It results in severe pain for the patient, even after having caries-free teeth.

Can tooth abrasion be treated?

Yes! Based on the severity, the treatment options change.

In the case of mild cervical abrasion, a simple restoration or dental filling is enough to treat.

But in case of severe cervical abrasion, where the crevice has deepened into the pulp chamber, then the only treatment option left is Root canal treatment and crown over it.

Is tooth abrasion reversible?

Unfortunately, the sad part of tooth abrasion is “it is irreversible”. The damage that occurred to the tooth is permanent.

Treatment cost for cervical abrasion?

A restoration or filling over abrasion can cost you around $100 to $150.

But in the case of a root canal and crown over it, the overall cost can range from $3000 to $5000.

Hence early intervention of such abrasions can save your time and money.
